Here are a few memorable and world changing events in the fields of science and technology that have occurred during the month of March.
March 6 – On this day in 1992, what many deem to be the first malware scare took place. The Michelangelo virus, so named because it was released on his birthday, brought computer security into the news. Michelangelo is a boot sector virus that rewrites critical data on the boot disk. Many projected that the virus would affect millions of computers. In the end, only a few thousand were effected and the creator was never identified but it introduced the public to viruses and the need for computer security.
March 10– In 1876, the first successful telephone call occurred between Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant, Thomas Watson. Bell had spent his life studying sound as the child of speech instructors and the husband of a hearing impaired wife. Bell has reported that his first call stated “Mr. Watson, come here – I want to see you.” This simple sentence was the beginning of what is now a staple for most every person on the planet.
March 15– Symbolics.com was the first ever domain name to be registered in 1985. Only six domains were registered that first year. As the internet gained in popularity registrations gained momentum. Today, there are over three hundred million registered internet domains.
