March 15, 2017 marks the 32nd anniversary of something that has forever changed our world. On that day in 1985, the first .com domain was registered. It was registered to Symbolics.com and was one of only six to register in that first year. It took two years for .com registrations to hit the 100 mark. The “dot-com bubble” occurred from 1995-2000 when it increased from 9,005 to more than 20 million. The generic top-level domain (gLTD) .com currently grows at one new site per second. http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/13/living/feat-30-years-dot-com/
Originally, the gLTD .com domain was reserved for commercial sites that intended to make a profit. Profit is exactly what the internet has given us. Online retail has changed the way many shop and do business. The internet has affected our economy in ways that no one could have ever predicted. It’s economic impact has reached the trillions.
It is where we socialize, become informed, and are entertained. It holds the mysterious Cloud and is where we access virtual applications and desktops for work and for play. The internet has changed every facet of our lives and looks to continue doing so for a long time to come.
